Learning to manage personal finances is one of the necessary steps in achieving independence for the young adults participating in Upbring BeREAL Austin – a Supervised Independent Living program for youth who have aged out of foster care – and even more important when they don’t have a family or a support system to rely on. BeReal Austin helps youth, ages 18-21, successfully transition to self-sufficiency and independence by providing support, education planning, mentorship, life skills and more.
Recently, a representative from Frost Bank visited with BeREAL Austin participants to focus on financial education and share a few helpful budgeting tools. Residents learned firsthand about money management and spending by playing a budget game in small groups – each left with a basic understanding about the fundamental skills needed to make smart decisions with their finances in the future.
BeREAL Austin now has 11 residents in their program and expects to be at full capacity (18) by the end of July. Since launching the program in Texas last October, BeREAL Austin has served a total of 18 young adults – including three of their children. Upbring Transitional Services Program Director Sarah Crocker and Upbring Case Manager Stephanie Talecki are currently focused on getting the newest residents settled; this includes setting up meetings with them to discuss what their vision of a successful transition into adulthood looks like.
