On Sunday, Sept. 13, Evangelical Lutheran Church in American (ELCA) congregations – nationwide – celebrated “God’s work. Our hands.” as an outreach effort to “make your community a better place.” Two groups of volunteers, from Triumphant Love Lutheran Church and St.Martin’s Lutheran Church, blessed Upbring BeREAL Austin with their energy and generous spirits throughout the weekend.
Triumphant Love – who began their service day early on Saturday morning – visited our BeREAL office to help clean, organize and set up the “drop-in center” for BeREAL residents. The hardworking group created a space where residents—all youth who have aged out of foster care—can study, receive case management services, cook a meal or just hang out.
On Sunday, St.Martin’s hosted a group of BeREAL residents at their fellowship hall for a cooking demonstration. Youth were given the opportunity to prepare two recipes: a Mexican casserole and a tortellini dish complete with a salad.
BeREAL residents shared their meal with the volunteers, which also provided opportunities to tell their stories and talk about their experience in the BeREAL program. As an added bonus – the group left with bags full of groceries and ingredients to prepare the delicious meals again in their own homes.
A big thank you goes out to Trimphant Love and St. Martin’s – we are so grateful that you both chose to share your gifts with our very deserving BeREAL family!
