Soccer Field Donation Will Boost Both Health and Morale at Unaccompanied Children’s Shelter - Upbring

0

Austin, TexasApril 19, 2016 – Upbring Bokenkamp Children’s Shelter had a lot to celebrate on Tuesday, April 12 with the opening of a brand new soccer field made possible with funds from The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, Ray and Patricia Kym and the Bokenkamp Living Trust and other loyal supporters.

The field was constructed in partnership with Hellas Construction, an Austin-based company specializing in artificial playing surfaces. The new field will provide an outlet for both exercise and morale to the unaccompanied children calling Bokenkamp their short-term home.

Many of these children are escaping gang violence, extreme poverty and civil unrest in places where children are kidnapped for ransom or even sold into human trafficking. Bokenkamp serves children ages 12-17, providing clinical care, basic medical care, education through Trinity Charter Schools and recreation/acculturation services.

At the unveiling, smiles on the kids’ faces were a testament to their ability to maintain hope throughout the toughest of circumstances. This field is not only a place for them to play – it’s a place where they are allowed to have fun and experience childhood the way it should be.

In addition to staff and residents, the ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Dr. Kurt Senske and Paul Hernandez of Upbring, Erin Barney and John Ramos of BlueCross BlueShield, Miguel Gutierrez of Hellas Construction, as well as local LCMS congregants Ray and Patricia Kym.
