Upbring hosting Open House for Lubbock community to dedicate new location, recruit foster families and pack back-to-school book bags for area children
Lubbock, Texas – August 17, 2016 – Upbring, the largest provider of foster care and adoption services in Texas, will host a Ribbon Cutting and Open House in conjunction with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce at its new Foster In Texas location in Lubbock today from 4:30-6 p.m. in order to share information with community members about serving as foster families for area children.
Guests will also have the opportunity to give much-needed support to local foster children heading back to school by joining staff and volunteers in assembling book bags with new school supplies donated by community members.
The event will provide an inside look at Upbring’s new Foster In Texas office, an expanded facility that is intended to meet a growing need in the region. Due to the number of children in crisis who need to be placed by the court system in Lubbock and the South Plains, there is a tremendous need for foster families throughout the region.
Across Texas, there is a shortage of available homes for children in foster care; as a result, hundreds have been forced to sleep in Child Protective Services (CPS) offices for a night or more over the past couple of years. Last month alone in the Lubbock area, there were seven children who had to sleep in the local CPS office at different times due to a lack of foster homes.
“It takes all members of our community working together to give children in need of foster homes a safe, nurturing environment,” said Dr. Kurt Senske, CEO of Upbring. “Lubbock needs more families to open their hearts and their homes to children living in harmful situations. We want to thank all of our foster families in Lubbock and across Texas for the loving work they do and invite families interested in becoming foster parents to join us.”
Upbring’s foster care and adoption program in Lubbock has been operating since September of 2007. Numerous children have since been placed with carefully screened foster families, who have received extensive training and support through the organization.
Currently, there are 1,596 children in foster care in the Lubbock and South Plains area. While 1,221 of those children are placed within their home region, 375 foster children have had to be placed farther from home due to a foster home shortage. This can increase children’s trauma, as they are further removed from family, friends, hometowns and schools.
Lacy Carr, Upbring’s Foster in Texas Lubbock Area Director added, “Upbring strives to raise expectations for all children who are served by our talented and caring staff—our ultimate goal is to help provide every child the life and the future that he or she deserves.”
Upbring also has a long history of service in Lubbock through other programs and services, including:
- Neighborhood House, an emergency assistance program in operation since 1967, provides food, prescriptions, utility assistance and other necessities to low-income individuals and households in crisis. Additionally, bags of diapers, kid packs to promote literacy, and Thanksgiving baskets are provided to those in need. Last year, more than 16,600 individuals were served—across nearly 5,500 Lubbock households.
- Health for Friends Clinic is a nurse-managed clinic that provides free health screening, one-on-one support, and lifestyle education to low-income adults in Lubbock County who have been diagnosed, or are at risk for, chronic health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and morbid obesity. These patients have little access to health care because they lack medical insurance and/or do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare benefits.
