Do you remember camping trips, play dates in the park, and Saturday soccer tournaments with your family cheering you on? Most of us have happy childhood memories, and we want our children to have them, too.
But for many children who enter foster care, typical childhood experiences have taken a back seat to safety and survival. Austin Habitat for Humanity is doing its part to change that.
Austin Habitat builds amazing, affordable houses for families in need, and in the process they also receive extra materials from in-kind donors. So they’ve rolled out a program where they build playhouses for families using these in-kind donations.
Now, that includes families we serve in our Foster In Texas program!
A safe place to make childhood memories
Tammy Russell recently received her playhouse, complete with a beautiful paint job, windows and shingles. Tammy adopted three children, and she has opened her home and heart to many more as a foster parent.
“The kids were very excited when they saw the playhouse,” Tammy said. “They spent a lot of time playing restaurant. I think they have a school set up in there now.”
Tammy’s children aren’t the only ones having fun. The playhouses have been so well-received that we have a waiting list of families who want one.
That is just fine with Aaron Landis, director of corporate sponsorships at Austin Habitat for Humanity.
“We’re proud to use our construction knowledge to help give children in need a safe place to play,” Aaron said. “As an affordable housing provider that serves many families with children, we understand the huge impact something as simple as having a space to use your imagination can have on a child.”
Aaron is right. By partnering with Upbring, Habitat is doing more than giving children a safe place to play. They are giving children a safe place to create memories that will last a lifetime, and for that we are so grateful!
Upbring regional intake specialist Pietro Palmari is joined by Habitat For humanity volunteers and the recipient family in the assembly and delivery of one of the many playhouses that have been delivered to foster families in our care.
