One of my goals as Director of Volunteers at the Nelson Children’s Center is to give the kids every opportunity to develop happy memories to take with them throughout the rest of their childhood. Celebrating Easter, with all its customs and rituals, presented one such opportunity.
For the last several years, the Young Adults ministry at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dallas has planned and coordinated a Nelson Center Easter Party. This Easter, “it took a village” as they were assisted by Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS is a college student ministry in Denton), Brothers Under Christ (a University of North Texas fraternity with a mission of serving Christ), and a Bible study from a local church. We had 35 volunteers!
None of the Easter essentials were left out: The kids dyed eggs in the cafeteria, had an Easter egg hunt by the playground, and decorated Easter baskets on the back porch gazebo. Most importantly, the children gathered in the library where they heard the TRUE meaning of the Resurrection. I feel confident that many lasting Easter memories were made that day.
