They came, they played, they had a blast! More than 100 Austin-area youth and chaperones invaded Corpus Christi on July 28thfor “Beach Bash Weekend,” an annual rite that combines volunteer energy, summer fun, and spiritual growth.
The church youth group visitors arrived at Bokenkamp Children’s Shelter and set up stations for a “Fun Friday Field Day.” Bokenkamp’s residents are refugee minors, most from Central and South America, who are cared for at the shelter until a permanent home can be arranged for them. The kids thrive on activities like the ones the Beach Bashers organized.
The activity stations included relays, balloon volleyball, dodge ball, charades, egg toss, tag, and a sit down/cool down spot where residents had a chance to interact with their visitors.
The Bokenkamp staff grilled corn for everyone, which was a big hit, and they were rewarded when the visiting youth washed their cars! One-on-one interactions between residents and visitors, shared prayers and shared stories made this a weekend that touched both groups in a way they won’t soon forget. Beach Bash Weekend was capped off with a rousing round of Ultimate Soccer before everyone said their goodbyes and the happily exhausted visitors returned to Austin.
