April 10, 2013 [AUSTIN, TX] – Lutheran Social Services of the South (LSS) has been chosen by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to provide the full spectrum of assessment services for children in the DFPS Region 3 area of Texas. Region 3 is comprised of 19 counties surrounding the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area and includes approximately 6,295 children in the state foster care system. The contract period runs from April, 2013 through March, 2018. Through this contract, LSS is expected to provide more than 2,000 assessments annually for children in this area.
As the Region 3 assessment services contractor, LSS is to provide four types of assessments throughout the region that cover interstate adoptions, kinship placements, foster-to-adopt placements, and Health, Educational, Social and Genetic History (HESGH) assessments. HESGH assessments entail a comprehensive study of an adoptive child’s biological family. LSS was awarded the contract after submitting a competitive proposal in response to the DFPS request for proposal.
“The assessment services contract awarded to LSS is a natural extension of the services to children we are able to provide in the Metroplex,” said Dr. Kurt Senske, chief executive officer of LSS. “Assessments are an important step in the road to permanency and our continuum of care.”
Currently, LSS operates three foster care offices in Region 3 within its Foster In Texas (FIT) program. Foster In Texas is a statewide program that recruits, trains, and maintains foster families that provide secure homes and therapeutic care to foster children. Those offices are located in Richardson, Garland, and Fort Worth. LSS also facilitates domestic adoptions through Lutheran Adoption Services of Texas (LAST), and provides post-adoption services in a nine-county area of Region 3.
Founded in 1881, LSS carries out its mission of providing help, healing, and hope to those in need, regardless of religious beliefs, ethnicity, gender, or age. In addition to foster care and adoption services, LSS programs include residential treatment centers for children, retirement communities for seniors experiencing mounting health problems, and assistance for victims of natural disasters.
