It took three weeks, 10 New Life girls, and a few staff members to get the July 4th float ready for the Canyon Lake parade. When it all came together, our float took 2nd place! Two volunteers from the Air Force, Lieutenant Brielle and Captain Vinny, rode with the girls atop the float, and everyone had a blast riding along and waving at the crowd. The empowering theme was “Together, we can do anything!”—the girls dressed like airplane mechanic Rosie the Riveter in bandanas and military jackets with the sleeves rolled up.
July 4th weekend activities also included a bake sale, held outside at Lowe’s Market in Canyon Lake. The girls baked for a solid two days to get ready, and worked hard on their posters advertising the sale. Lots of life skills lessons learned about running a business: baking, budgeting, managing money, and interpersonal sales interactions with customers. The money raised will go to their cottage to fund outings in the community.
The bake sale was a huge success and Lowe’s has invited us back to do it again. We’ll be ready!
