When Thomas Cross got the phone call informing him that he’d won a new car, he didn’t believe it. Stephanie Sage, marketing and community relations director of the Valero Texas Open, assured Cross that he really was having a very lucky day. Cross, a full-time truck driver and firefighter for Kyle, Texas, is a regular attendee of the Valero Texas Open. Sage informed him that he won the “Donor Attendance” contest, where anyone who made a contribution to Birdies for Charity® and attended at least one day of the Open was entered into a grand prize drawing to win a brand new Ford Fiesta.
The donation that made winning this grand prize possible for Cross was in support of New Life Children’s Center, the LSS residential treatment center in Canyon Lake for abused and troubled young girls. New Life has participated in the Birdies for Charity fundraising program for over eight years.
Thomas Cross, accompanied by his wife Angie, was greeted at the Jordan Ford dealership by representatives of the Valero Texas Open, New Life Children’s Center, and Jordan Ford when they presented him keys to his new car on July 31. Jordan Ford, San Antonio’s oldest Ford dealership, generously donated the car.
“It was great meeting Thomas and Angie and congratulating them on winning the Ford Fiesta through Birdies for Charity. It went to a very deserving family!” Stephanie Sage remarked. “The Birdies for Charity campaign positively impacts the lives of thousands of San Antonians and Bexar County residents each year, thanks to the incredible contributions made by individual and corporate donors,” she explained.
This year the Valero Texas Open Birdies for Charity campaign raised over $1.84M for local participating charities and schools. Australian Steven Bowditch was the 2014 Valero Texas Open trophy winner, claiming his first PGA TOUR victory.
