FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, Texas – August 19, 2014 –Lutheran Social Services of the South (LSS), an organization committed to ending multigenerational child abuse through innovative children’s services, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for their newest facility Humana House at New Life Children’s Center in Canyon Lake.

“Lutheran Social Services’ mission is lived out here at New Life Children’s Center by providing a safe haven for abused and neglected girls,” said Dr. Kurt Senske, LSS CEO. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors – Humana Foundation, Martin Instrument, McKenna Foundation and Kronkosky Charitable Foundation – Humana House will provide a safe, stable place to help with healing for the girls and their families.”

Many families, due to geographical or financial restrictions, don’t have the means to stay for longer visits and Humana House helps bridge this gap. “Our emphasis on trauma therapy helps provide good outcomes,” said NLCC CEO Bob Slocum. “Humana House brings families and kids together, enabling our staff to better facilitate in a regulated environment increasing the likelihood of long-term success.” NLCC’s long-term goal is to have full occupancy at Humana House, especially on weekends. “To start, if we can reach 40 families of the 80 kids we have here, that would be great,” said Slocum.

New Life—a residential treatment center for severely troubled girls ages 11-17—addresses treatment for emotional disorders due to abuse and neglect. These children arrive at New Life with serious emotional and behavioral disorders stemming from past trauma. Beyond the basic needs of shelter, clothing, and food, New Life gives them a safe place to heal, personalized therapy and on-campus education.

Humana House is a multi-purposed residential building where families of the girls can stay for longer visits, allowing them to participate more in their child’s treatment – improving the chances of success and future reunification.
