Michael Loo is an insightful leader and an innovative trailblazer who combines his business brain with his mission-focused heart to bring forth programmatic solutions that give thousands of children a reason to have faith that they will have a second chance to experience a happy and healthy childhood. With his analytical problem-solving abilities, relentless determination and immeasurable compassion and empathy for children, Michael hones business tactics he excelled in during his time as an executive at multibillion-dollar companies to achieve organizational goals. At Upbring, the highest goal is driving its important mission: break the cycle of child abuse by empowering children, families and communities.
Michael’s most recent transition from the for-profit to nonprofit sector occurred when he joined Upbring as Chief Financial Officer in 2013. He was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer in 2015 and then appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer in 2020. Under his operational direction, Upbring programs have experienced exponential growth with the current trajectory showing great promise of leading to systemic change and innovative applications within the child welfare and social services space.
Michael’s credentials include expertise in driving beneficial change, next-level value creation, strategic planning, operations, technology and finance in complex organizations that range from start-ups to large multibillion-dollar corporations. Michael served as Vice President – Controller & Treasurer of Hawaiian Airlines for seven years. He later went on to spend a total of nine years—two as Controller and then seven as Vice President of Finance & Administration (fka Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer)—at Kamehameha Schools, a private, endowed trust valued at more than $11 billion as the largest private commercial, residential and agricultural real estate landholder and private school system in the State of Hawaii. He most recently worked at Sopogy, Inc., a technology provider in the micro-concentrated solar power sector where he spearheaded the organization’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) efforts as Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. During this combined tenure, Michael has consistently and successfully implemented changes that have resulted in refocused strategies, double-digit productivity gains, value creation and an operational cash savings of millions.
Michael serves on the Board of Directors for both Texas Alliance of Child and Family Services and Nicole’s Place. He has also previously served on the Board of Directors in the respective state chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys and Girls Club and Better Business Bureau. He is a multiple award recipient as a Certified Public Accountant and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Oregon. He and his wife Julie, sons Austin and Dawson and daughter Reese live in Austin, Texas.
