3 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Thanksgiving When You Can’t be with Family

The holidays can be lonely for so many. Although the music we hear on the radio and in stores tells us that it’s “the most wonderful time of the year,” being away from family can make the last six weeks of the year incredibly hard. What if this year could be different?

What if this year we chose to gather with friends and neighbors and use our time and resources to make a difference in the lives of children who need to know they are seen, loved and cherished?

Here are threee ways you can celebrate Thanksgiving when you can’t be with family:

  1. Foundation Communities provides housing to Upbring’s BeREAL participants, and they invite you to help make the holidays special by helping to fill a wishlist for a Foundation Communities family, sponsoring a family, donating items or making an online donation. Learn More.
  2. Help Operation Turkey meet their goal of serving 50,000 meals, as well as care packages and clothing, to Lubbock’s homeless this Thanksgiving. Learn more about how you can serve the Lubbock community this year.
  3. Give back while you shop! Properly-fitting shoes are essential items that boost the self-esteem and confidence of children in foster care. This holiday season, BEARPAW is partnering with Ticket to Dream to provide thousands of pairs of warm, comfortable and fashionable boots. Purchase a pair of boots at from Nov. 24-Dec. 11, and BEARPAW will donate a pair of boots to a child in foster care.

We’re thankful for you!

As part of the Upbring family, we are so thankful for you and all of our partners, volunteers and community friends who help us continue on our mission to break the cycle of child abuse. However you’re spending your holiday this year, know that we will be counting YOU among our many blessings.

Upbring Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement

Last year the Upbring family gathered together on #GivingTuesday to raise nearly $28,000 in 24 hours to support the courageous young adults in our BeREAL program. In 2016, your gifts made a SIGNIFICANT impact on dozens of children in our care. This year we’re excited to share that we’re continuing our participation in this incredible day of giving, this time benefiting therapeutic foster care!

What Is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Thanks to a generous offer from our friends at the Carl C. Anderson Sr. & Marie Jo Anderson Charitable Foundation, when you donate to Upbring on Tuesday, November 28 your gift will DOUBLE in value and impact to help break the cycle of child abuse! The Carl C. Anderson Sr. & Marie Jo Anderson Charitable Foundation have agreed to match every gift to Upbring – dollar for dollar up to $45,000 total – benefiting those in our therapeutic foster care program.

“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our sixth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”

For These Golfers, Changing Lives is Par for the Course

The nearly 300 golfers who recently teed off during the annual Upbring Golf Austin and Houston tournaments were playing for more than birdies, pars and hole-in-ones. For these athletes, a few hours on the course offered a powerful way to change a child’s life.

The events raised a combined $113,000 for Upbring Foster In Texas (FIT), BeREAL, Krause Children’s Center and New Life Children’s Center.

3 Easy Ways to Help After Hurricane Harvey

As images of Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath flood our social media feeds and television screens, our hearts break for Texans and Louisianians who have experienced tremendous loss. As our Upbring staff work tirelessly to serve those in need, we know so many of you are asking how you, too, can help.

Whether you live locally or across the country, there are three easy ways that you can make a difference and support those who will soon start rebuilding their lives as the flood waters recede.

3 Easy Ways to Help After Hurricane Harvey

1. Give. Whether you donate to Upbring on our website or set up your own Facebook fundraiser, any amount you can donate will be used to give families the tools they need to get back on their feet. Businesses interested in giving to Upbring can contact our Director of Corporate Relations, Ryan Armstrong, directly at: [email protected]

2. Share. Letting your friends and family know about Upbring’s disaster response efforts and the work we’re doing to support families in crisis will help us reach even more people. The more people we reach, the more donations we receive, and the more lives we can impact. Invite your friends to our Facebook page where we are constantly providing updates, or take a few seconds to share a Facebook post or Tweet is a small act that can make a big difference.

3. Pray. Please keep families, first responders, disaster response teams, volunteers and officials in your prayers. We believe in the power of prayer, and hope you’ll keep Upbring, our staff, and those we serve in your prayers. “Lord God All-Powerful, there is no one like you. You are strong, Lord, and always faithful. You rule the stormy sea. You can calm its angry waves.” Psalm 89:8-9
